An Introvert in I.T.

Information technology, a profession with its core rooted in networking and without which nothing seems to happen, everything halts and no rupee pours in. Servers, systems and people connected in different topologies, with different configurations forming a part of a giant machine running synchronously. People seem to be daily scrumming, gears are always turning and money minting with an occasional or sometimes frequent bug occurring. It is all about externalizing, getting connected, receiving and sending bytes people always in a continuous walk on the two way street of communication. What about introverts? Have you considered that the devices that once eased up their conversation mechanism now mess them up when once they start working in IT.

Classifying personality on the basis of the MBTI scale is not so easy and understanding where an individual lies on this continuum is far more cumbersome. Being an introvert is paralleled and even equaled with being shy, closed and reserved. Being silent becomes a crime in itself and speaking less is foreseen as an anti-constitutional act by some. Networking is essential, going to parties is mandatory, interfering in personal spaces is very important, only then can one grow and get shit done. Also, if you are considerate enough about other people’s personality and don’t nag them enough you are not a good leader and lack the skills. Just as bugs in codes are uncertain, people perceive that individuals who are quiet have something deeply wrong with them. They take it as their moral responsibility to remove the so called shyness as it hampers the entire process. In 1946, when a moth decided to live in MARK II (a computer) it hampered the working of its relay systems, it was immediately removed and voila! MARK II started working as before. Introvert-ism is not a bug or a moth which can be removed from a personality or can be fixed to make people turn into extroverts or ambiverts. It is just what a person is.

Being a person that gets tired while communicating and interacting with individuals it becomes stressful to work even if the work itself is not so pressurizing.  An introvert in IT that begins to talk too much throughout the day and becomes exhausted mentally, and when the time comes for internal talks there are no thoughts left. The entire existence falls as the internal self is at risk. Maybe this is not only related to IT but is required in other areas of work as well. Since you cannot possess and spend money without other person’s interference there are not many professions that respect this aspect of personality. Not all introverts are maladaptive day dreamers but other people need to respect that thinking is in fact equal to speaking. Respect the introverts, give them space, they are working hard often oppressed under the voices of the extroverts. Remember you do not hear the heartbeat until you get too close to the chest but the heart is still working even when no one is listening, it does not shout or proclaim, it just does.
