When Cupid got replaced

I observed from a distance. An angel floated in the sky, wings fluttering like that of a pigeon but more majestic. She looked like an assassin, a professional assassin. I have kept an eye on her for quite a long time now. She kills people with love, bitter-sweet poison. High on precision she was, no scope required, no guns and no bullets, just a bow and many arrows. She was shooting arrows and meeting her daily targets. But there was something melancholic about her. For she herself was alone. But she kept his word and stayed true to her work. Angel of love, assassin of hearts- Cupid.

“I am an angel with wings,
                                                               No bullets no guns,
My bow and arrows will do many things
                                                               Sweet love song everybody hums.”

Her forte was piercing two hearts with one arrow, single shot and one love. One bullet, two targets. I had a smile on my face when I saw how meticulous she was in choosing her target subjects. Observing them, their habits, there way of talking and then giving them sometimes love at first sight.

So she went on flying above, she saw her new targets. A boy and a girl. She followed them separately, distinctly observing them in different hours of the day. Both belonged to different worlds, so Cupid thought that she could apply the “opposites attract” rule. Cupid believed that those two were perfect for each other, ying-yang, different sides of the same coin, two eyes one heart. So, the angel of love bent her arrow and made the shot. The arrow hit the girl but it missed the heart of the boy. The arrow was supposed to disappear but it didn’t. It pierced the heart of the girl, punctured her one chamber and the heart started beating in a different manner. Skipping some beats, covering some beats. The boy was unaffected, his heart pumped blood in a regular fashion, de-oxygenated to oxygenated, every second the same. The girl became obsessed with the boy, a one sided affair. Angel of Love, Cupid, became sadder after her failure. She was in despair after seeing the condition of the girl, girl whom she wanted to be in love with that boy. But that girl now cannot remove that arrow stabbed in the heart deep. She becomes lonely now just as the Cupid.

                                                                “I missed my target,
                                                                The girl is hurt,
                                                                Unaffected is the boy’s heart,
                                                                Sometimes opposites don’t attract”

So, now the higher authority interferes and relieves Cupid of her duty. Cupid is now asked for a replacement. Cupid asks the broken hearted girl to take her place. Cupid wants to be free now, even though she had wings, Cupid never really flew before. Cupid was locked in the duty of responsibility- to make people fall in love. But now the girl takes her place because she wants to be a better Cupid than her. And don’t you worry the old Cupid has made a deal with the higher chiefs that she will train the new recruit. Cupid will now train the new Cupid. Hopefully this new love angel won’t miss her targets. No one sided love, no flame that burns from the inside, no lost hopes. All positive, that is love. Now I see this new being at work, slightly more effective than the previous one. More couples in love, less Gatsby(s). Maybe the older Cupid was too a girl in love once.

“I wish that you take my place,
I will train you; give you my arrows and bow,
I can only do this to remove sadness from your face,
You my sweet target are the new Cupid now.”
